Virginia state senator injured in home; another person found dead inside

A Virginia state senator was seriously injured early Tuesday in an assault that occurred at his house in Bath County, west of Charlottesville. A second person inside the home was found dead, according to Virginia State Police.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) was stabbed and critically injured and that the dead person is his son, Gus, who suffered a gunshot wound.
Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, would not comment beyond a brief statement issued Tuesday morning. Police were planning a more detailed briefing around noon in Charlottesville.
The statement says police responded to Deeds’s home about 7:25 a.m.. The senator was flown to University of Virginia Health System Hospital.
