Virginia state senator injured in home; another person found dead inside

A Virginia state senator was seriously injured early Tuesday in an assault that occurred at his house in Bath County, west of Charlottesville. A second person inside the home was found dead, according to Virginia State Police.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) was stabbed and critically injured and that the dead person is his son, Gus, who suffered a gunshot wound.
Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, would not comment beyond a brief statement issued Tuesday morning. Police were planning a more detailed briefing around noon in Charlottesville.
The statement says police responded to Deeds’s home about 7:25 a.m.. The senator was flown to University of Virginia Health System Hospital.

Mike Shanahan, with his job under scrutiny, defends his tenure, says cap penalty hurt

Mike Shanahan said Monday he believes the Washington Redskins are headed in the right direction under his leadership despite this season’s struggles, delivering what amounted to a defense of his four-year coaching tenure in the face of mounting criticism following Sunday’s loss that dropped Washington into last place in the NFC East.
Speaking at a news conference at Redskins Park, Shanahan deflected questions about his job security but said the Redskins will have a chance to improve their roster next season after a two-year salary cap penalty expires.

Longtime radio analyst asked for Kirk Cousins at least twice during Sunday’s loss in Philadelphia.
“I think you’ve got to take a look at a number of things when you take a look at the direction of a football team,” Shanahan said. “I think when you take a look at the offensive numbers . . . that just doesn’t happen naturally with a lot of new players. We talked about it last year. We had six new players on our team, and putting up the numbers that we’re putting up are pretty impressive, especially with losing the $36 million salary cap over those two years time frame.”
Shanahan’s comments came a day after the Redskins’ record fell to 3-7 with the 24-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Redskins have a record of 24-34 under Shanahan, who signed a five-year contract worth about $7 million per season when he was hired by owner Daniel Snyder. The Redskins have failed to build on last season’s NFC East title, forged with a seven-game winning streak to close the regular season, and fans and some media observers increasingly have speculated Shanahan won’t be back for a fifth season.
Shanahan declined to respond directly to a question Monday about whether he thinks the Redskins’ results during the remainder of this season will determine his future with the team or whether he instead has been given assurances by Snyder he will return next season.
“I don’t talk about those things during the season for obvious reasons,” he said.
It does not appear that such an assurance has been given. A person familiar with the Redskins’ planning said in recent days it was “too early” to know whether Shanahan’s job is safe beyond this season. NFL coaches often are given an extension to avoid coaching in the final season of a contract.
The Redskins are in the second season of dealing with their two-year, $36 million salary cap reduction imposed by the NFL for the manner in which the team structured players’ contracts during the sport’s season without a salary cap in 2010. Shanahan said that penalty has hurt the team. But the Redskins, he said, will be able to do more in the upcoming offseason and beyond.
“You don’t have the type of depth,” Shanahan said. “But you’re able to put a very solid football team together. And in the future, it will get better because we do have the ability to get more depth. We’ve got the ability to add some players on both sides of the football, and that gives you a chance to get better as a football team.”
Redskins players vowed after the loss in Philadelphia to continue to play hard during the remainder of the season. The Redskins host the San Francisco 49ers, the defending NFC champions, Monday night at FedEx Field to begin a three-game home stand.

Uganda must come good on Italian job

Abu Dhabi- The mood in the Ugandan camp here at the Yas Island Rontana Hotel in Abu Dhabi remains good despite the opening two defeats.
The team is aiming to get ‘out of jail’ with their first International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 Qualifiers win when they meet Italy at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium Oval today. “It cannot get any worse,” said Brian Masaba, a man touted as the next Ugandan skipper, opting for a philosophical analysis.
“When you hit rock bottom, you can only go up. We know we are one win away from getting our groove back and we plan to hit the road running once again. We have to do the Italian Job.”
The former U-19 skipper also pleaded to the Ugandan fans back home to remain calm in the face of adversity. “We know how they (fans) feel,” added the 22-year-old. “No one knows more than us that we have to deliver. The batsmen have to come to the party. Our fielding and bowling is okay but the batsmen have to get into the runs. And they know it.”
But Italy, fourth in Group A with two points in as many matches, will be confident of toppling point-less Uganda. In the only T20 the two countries have played, Italy toppled Uganda by 13 runs in Dubai last year.
Ugandan skipper Davis Karashani and his troops got their revenge earlier this year in May when they bowled out the Italians 91 enroute to a sweet 23-run win during the ICC Division III World Cricket League in Bermuda.
After defeats to hosts UAE and Hong Kong, Uganda’s coach Johan Rudolph knows he has his hands full as he seeks a winning formula and a plot to keep Italian big hitters Gareth Berg, Andy Northcote, Carl Sandri and Peter Petricola quiet as well as deny bowler Gayashan Munasinghe early wickets.

Homeboy Hadi takes Tour of Rwanda yellow Jersey

Janvier Hadi shows his delight after winning the Yellow Jersey in stage one of 2013 Tour of Rwanda. Right is the Sports ministry’s PS Edward Kalisa. Times Sport / T. Kisambira.
Team Rwanda and Karisimbi’s rising star Janvier Hadi won stage one of 2013 Tour of Rwanda on Sunday in Prologue from Amahoro-Kimironko-Amahoro (3.5km) after clocking 4’05’’.

The 22-year old starts today’s stage two, Kigali-Kirehe (129.9km) wearing the Yellow Jersey. He received US$630 (around Rwf0.43m) for winning stage one and US$300 (about Rwf0.2m) for wining the Prologue.

The 2013 Tour of Rwanda got off to an amazing stage with huge crowds turning up to cheer the 15 home riders representing three teams;  Karisimbi, Akagera and Muhabura.

Hadi finished three seconds ahead of Frenchman Nicolas Lefrançois of Team www.rwanda-direct.com/rwanda-akagera-park/ Development to become the second Rwandan to win a stage in the Tour of Rwanda after Joseph Biziyaremeye in 2012.

South African Louis Meintjes of Team MTN-Qhubeka came in third place.

After the win Hadi said, “It’s my first major victory with the national team and I am really delighted about it. This win is a result of hard work in training with Jock Boyer (Team Rwanda head coach).”

Team Akagera rider Valens Ndayisenga was the second Rwandan highest finisher in 15th position after he clocked 4’17’’25. The best team Green Jersey was won by MTN-Qhubeka of South Africa which features Rwandan Adrien Niyonshuti.

Team Karisimbi’s Bonaventure Uwizeyimana finished in 20th position in a time of 4’20’’48, Team Akagera’s Hassan Rukundo came in 22nd position with a time of 4’21’29, while Team Karisimbi skipper Nathan Byukusenge finished in 24th after clocking 4’22’’79.

Adrien Niyonshuti came in 35th position with the time of 4’24’’09 behind two other Rwandan riders Patrick Byukusenge (33) and Joseph Biziyaremye (34).

Serious business starts today when the riders set off from Nyabugogo in Kigali to Kirehe District. They will cover 129.9 kilometres. On Tuesday, the riders will compete from Rwamagana to Musanze which has a distance of 151.5km.

Residents urged on early testing as Rwanda marks Diabetes Day

A Sports ministry official leads residents in a stretching exercise. The World Diabetes Day in Rwanda was used as an occasion to encourage the public to be physically active by engaging in exercises and sports activities. The New Times/ JP Bucyensenge.
Rwandans have been urged to seek early tests on non-communicable diseases such as diabetes to ensure that they remain healthy or get timely treatment if found already suffering from the diseases.

The call was made on Friday in Gisagara District, Southern Province, as health officials joined residents to mark the World Diabetes Day.

The day is annually marked on November 14 to raise awareness on the effects of diabetes and its complications among the general population.

It was marked under the theme, “Prevent diabetes to protect our future.” This year’s celebrations mark the fifth and final year of the 2009–2013 campaign on diabetes education and prevention around the world.

It was co-organised by the Ministry of Health and that of Sports and Culture, and used as an occasion to encourage the people to engage in sports. Participants were also given free diabetes test.

Speaking at the function, Dr Evariste Ntaganda, the head of the non-communicable diseases division at the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, said early testing gives one a chance to know their status and seek early response.

Dr Ntaganda said the Ministry of Health has been organising training and skills development workshops for practicing medical staff in order to equip them with basic skills on how to deal with cases of diabetes.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Culture, Eduard Kalisa, said his ministry is partnering with that of health to raise awareness on ways of preventing diabetes, including through sports.

Kalisa said his ministry will continue to encourage sports for masses to make sure every Rwandan maintains a healthy body weight.

He encouraged residents to be physically active and eat a healthy diet, among other best practices, to mitigate the risks of catching diabetes.

Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days and a healthy diet can drastically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented.

Deadly disease

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (Type 1) or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces (Type 2). Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar.

More than 350 million people worldwide have diabetes, according to figures from the World Health Organisation.

The disease is responsible for one death every seven seconds and accounts for more than 4.6 million deaths per year.

In 2004, an estimated 3.4 million people died from consequences of high fasting blood sugar. Total deaths from diabetes are projected to rise by more than 50 per cent in the next 10 years, according to the organisation.

In developed countries, most people with diabetes are above the age of retirement, whereas in developing countries, those most frequently affected are aged between 35 and 64.

Officials say 50 per cent of sufferers do not know that they are diabetic, while WHO argues that the lack of awareness about diabetes, combined with insufficient access to health services and essential medicines can lead to complications such as blindness, amputation and kidney failure.

Jean Marie Habimana, a diabetic, recounted his ordeal before he discovered that he was suffering from diabetes.

He recalled how when his health situation worsened a few years ago, his family rejected him and some people in his home area started thinking that he had contracted HIV/Aids.

“Had I not reported at hospital, I would have passed away,” he said.

“It is in everyone’s interest to ensure that they adopt best practices and make sure they adopt behavior that do not put their lives at risk,” said  Habimana, who called for continued education campaigns on the disease.

Terrapins Insider

All the latest University of Maryland athletics news, notes and insight from Post reporter Alex Prewitt.
The scouting report of Oregon State contained just two players, and that duo quickly sucked the energy from the building. Many Terrapins insisted they didn’t even notice Obama. As it turned out, they appeared not to notice senior guard Roberto Nelson (31 points) or forward Devon Collier (29 points, 11 rebounds) either.
“We really didn’t defend well at all,” forward Evan Smotrycz said. “We just didn’t do our job. We didn’t show long enough on ball screens, get help-side, box out, everything. We didn’t do it well.”
Turgeon, in his third season in College Park, prides himself on coaching teams with stingy defense and fly-trap rebounding. But possession after possession, the Beavers (2-1) found easy buckets inside, shooting nearly 60 percent for the game while attempting just eight three-pointers. Maryland (1-2) actually won the rebounding battle, grabbing 23 on the offensive end alone, though Oregon State’s high-percentage offense ripped opportunities away from the Terps on the defensive glass.
“I just can’t get our guys to box out,” Turgeon said. “We’re doing some things in practice. I’m never done trying to figure it out.”
Three games into the season, days away from flying to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam tournament, the Terps have already grown into a frustrated group. They missed nine free throws and committed 15 turnovers, off which the Beavers scored 29 points. Despite five players reaching double figures, including a team-high 23 points from Dez Wells, 16 from Smotrycz and 15 from Jake Layman, the rest of the group contributed just nine.
Wells, who four days earlier was benched against Abilene Christian for a “miscommunication” with Turgeon, reassumed his role as Maryland’s spark plug, attacking the rim and making all eight free throw attempts. Afterward, though, Wells accepted the blame for the loss.
“It’s just my leadership,” he said. “I take full responsibility for not having my guys ready. I’m only as good as they are. I wasn’t too good tonight for getting them ready for each half. I take responsibility for that. It’s not on us; it’s on me. I’ll get better at that.”
Neither team led by more than six points during the first half, when the lead changed nine times and the game was tied on 13 occasions, including 38-38 at intermission. Freshman point guard Roddy Peters (Suitland) played well, knifing through Oregon State’s zone defense for 10 points and six assists, but the Beavers opened the second half with an 8-0 run, aided by sloppy Terps passing and slow defensive rotations. Soon the home team was behind by a dozen points.
Despite foul trouble hampering Smotrycz, Wells and forward Charles Mitchell (10 points, eight rebounds), Maryland came within three points late in the second half. Each time, though, Oregon State marched back down the court and turned to Collier or Nelson, who provided the game’s biggest bucket by making a step-back jumper with the shot clock winding down that clinched the game.
“Until we’re committed to being a good defensive team, we’re going to have results like this,” Turgeon said.
